Molecular Biology and Genetics

Molecular biology and genetics is a multidisciplinary, ever-evolving science and explores the basic properties, structures and functions of living molecules, interactions with each other, and cellular responses resulting from interaction. The purpose of this department is to understand molecular basis of diseases stem from genetic disorders by studying the structure and functions of DNA, RNA, proteins and their interactions with each other in the healthy functioning of cells and organisms. Understanding of these mechanisms at the molecular level makes an important contribution to the treatment and diagnosis process. For the development of personalized therapies, it is indispensable for the emergence of cellular mechanisms by understanding intracellular and intercellular signals. This department aims to develop new therapeutic strategies such as stem cell treatments, drug designs, therapy with nanoparticles, immunological therapies and vaccine production, which researches the molecular mechanisms of pathological conditions and works to eliminate them. Complex syndromes such as heart diseases, diabetes, genetic disorders, cell signaling problems caused by cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, viral and bacterial infections, stem cell, plant genetics and microbial genetics studies are the research fields of molecular biology and genetics.

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of Haliç University offers high quality educational program, equipped laboratory infrastructure and training with the expert and experienced faculty members. In the first two years of our undergraduate program, students are given courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, which are mainly basic science courses, in order to provide scientific infrastructure. In the last two years, compulsory theoretical and laboratory courses such as molecular biology, molecular genetics, molecular biology techniques and molecular biology applications, cell molecular biology are given. In addition to the compulsory courses, there are some in/out field elective courses in special fields such as cancer biology and genetics, genetic engineering, stem cell biology, RNA world, bioinformatics, molecular microbiology and microbial technology. So, students can explore different aspects of their departments. At the end of 4 years, our students are well equipped and finish as preferred graduates in the field. Our department also offers courses such as Mathematics, Engineering Departments, Midwifery, Nutrition and Dietetics as well as double major and minor programs. In addition, students can be offered educational opportunities abroad under the ERASMUS exchange program. In addition to the Bachelor's program in Molecular Biology and Genetics, it also offers graduate opportunities to students. Our M.Sc. Program has 26 students enrolled. Graduates of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics are expected to graduate from research and development (R&D), medical, biochemistry, forensic sciences, biomedical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications, food, agriculture and animal husbandry sectors as well as domestic and overseas research centers and laboratories as well as academic institutions as researchers or as managers in the relevant sectors.

Turkish Language and Literature

The main target of this program is to acquaint students with prominent authors and poets of Turkish literature without any segregation or negligence between its genres, historical periods and research areas. Therefore the curriculum of Turkish Language and Literature offers a wide spectrum of courses related with different research areas of Turkish literature. Students not only will discover the characteristics of Turkish language and its dialects but also will comprehend the broadness of its linguistic geography. In other words they will discover both the deep-rooted and self-renewing world of Turkish language. Moreover, another aim of the program is to offer the opportunity of learning Persian as an elective course in order to raise young Turcologists who are able to follow contemporary studies on world literature, as well. Graduates of the program may work at private and public libraries and various governmental institutions such as the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Ministry, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of National Education and TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) , may teach at secondary schools by accomplishing the certificate program of pedagogical formation and may also be instructor in the Turkish Units of universities. They may continue their graduate studies at other universities in Turkey and become academic members. Besides they may choose a different career path by improving themselves on the areas of publication and advertising.

American Culture And Literature

The mathematics discipline is an interdisciplinary field producing methods and techniques, which can be used in a number of different disciplines, in addition to its self-development. The Applied Mathematics department explores the areas of practice of traditional and modern mathematics and brings these areas into use with research, education and industrial purposes. The topics under primary focus of the department are as follows: Mathematical physics, Differential equations, Optimization, Operations research, Game theory, Stochastic control theory, Probability theory, Quantitative analysis, Computer sciences, Statistics The Department of Applied Mathematics aims to support research and development activities in these fields and to create practice areas in the academic or industrial environments. In accordance with this purpose, students from different disciplines who are willing to specialize in this field are also accepted in our program. Therefore our program is open to graduates of natural and applied sciences, and engineering, alongside qualified teaching staff specialized in natural and applied sciences fields as well as graduates of business administration, economics, informatics, econometrics, etc.

Our Master’s program consists of seven courses of 21 credits and a seminar course of 3 credits, and the thesis.
